Compliance Accounting Is Not Enough to Run a Business
Cannabis remains an emerging market, but it is also volatile, heavily regulated, and increasingly competitive. Operators are navigating changing federal rules, state and local regulations, license restrictions, compliance hurdles, pricing pressure, and markets that can become saturated quickly.
As the industry matures, operators are usually forced into one of three paths: become more competitive, scale with discipline, or prepare for a potential sale. Each path requires timely financial information, accurate reporting, and stronger management infrastructure.

Justin Botillier
Founding Member & CEO
Justin Botillier has more than twenty years of experience advising small business owners. He built Calyx CPA into a national practice focused exclusively on cannabis, psychedelics, and plant medicine adjacent businesses - helping operators navigate complex tax, accounting, entity, and compliance issues. In 2016, Justin sold his general accounting practice to focus exclusively on cannabis, long before most firms recognized the industry needed full-time, specialized advisors.
Justin is a nationally recognized voice on cannabis taxation and 280E mitigation - including Section 471(c) implementation, claiming refunds, audit representation, and industry advisory. His approach is rooted in the belief that cannabis businesses deserve technically sound, defensible representation, not fear-based advice or generic accounting support.
